Randon Johnson – Head Coach

Head Coach Randon Johnson begins his seventh year coaching at his alma mater. As a 1998 graduate of AHS, the former high school baseball captain of the Sandies is beginning his 22nd year of coaching and 15th as a head baseball coach. Amarillo High is Johnson’s sixth coaching post, including stops at Palo Duro, Midland High, Leander Rouse, Lago Vista, and Bushland. Johnson has been selected eight times as the Coach of the Year after the district season. He
has led 7 district championship teams, the ‘24 campaign was the first undefeated district season with the Golden Sandstorm. That success in the regular season has translated to 25 victories in the playoffs for Johnson’s teams, including three trips to the Regional Semi-Finals, and a trip to Round Rock for the State Tournament with AHS in 2021. Coach Johnson has been selected to coach all-stars games for the Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association and the Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches Association. He has been blessed to share 25 years of marriage with his wife, Jennifer, and they
have two beautiful daughters, Jessilyn and Reese.

Kameron Mathis – Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Kameron Mathis enters his third season as a member of the Sandie Baseball coaching staff. Prior to being in Amarillo, Coach Mathis spent two years in Bridgeport, Texas where he helped lead the Bulls to their first playoff victory in over 10 years. A 2016 graduate of Bushland High School, Coach Mathis was an All-State first baseman, District MVP, and two-time district champion for Head Coach Randon Johnson. After high school, he attended the University of Texas – Permian Basin where he was a 4-year starter on the football field. Mathis also pitched his freshman season before making the decision to step away from the game of baseball. The spotlight of Coach Mathis’s time in the Permian Basin was meeting his wife, Dee. Coach Mathis married his lovely bride in December of 2019. Since, the Lord has blessed them with two beautiful kids, Greyson (4) and Kodi (1).

BLAKE FRYE – JV Gold Coach

Assistant Coach Blake Frye enters his second season with the Sandie Baseball Program. Coach Frye is the JV Gold coach and looks to build strong, hardworking baseball players with knowledge, skills and the true meaning of what it means to be a Sandie baseball player. A graduate of River Road High School in 2016 where he was a 4-year starter, and received All-State honors his junior year at shortstop and senior year at pitcher. After high school he attended Eastern New Mexico University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in science. While attending Eastern he played baseball for 4 1⁄2 years before hanging up the cleats for good in 2020. Frye started all 4 years he was in college both in the outfield and on the mound. He is a husband to Bushland softball coach Tayler Frye and has a 1-year-old named Easton. Coach Frye is excited to continue the tradition with the Sandie baseball program.

Sam Smeaton– JV BLACK COACH

Coach Sam Smeaton is entering his first season at Amarillo High, serving as Special Teams Coordinator, Freshman Defensive Coordinator, and Assistant Baseball Coach. He most recently served as Defensive Coordinator at Highland Park, where he also coached basketball and track. He helped lead a rebuild at Amarillo Highland Park that saw the football program go from 0-10 in 2021 to a playoff berth in 2022 and a 5 win-season in 2023, the highest such mark at HP in nearly a decade. Prior to that, he served 4 years at Caprock, where he coached 4 All-District Cornerbacks and helped the Longhorns win their first district title and first Bi-District Championship in 43 years. While at Caprock he spent 2 years as the Freshman Baseball coach under Trevor Cordova. He has also had prior coaching stops at Dumas and Sam Houston Middle School. He is a 2008 graduate of Tascosa High School, but luckily married a Sandie, his wife Alli, and has two amazing sons, Eli & Jack, ages 7 and 4.
